I think it is because 'ami dewa' is the Tibetan pronouncement - whereas 'amitabha' is the nagari script of the Sanskrit. Like vajra/benza or padma/pema in the guru mantra. I've seen some people claim the 'dewa' is short for dewachen, but I think that is just a quirk of the transliteration. By chanting "om ami dewa hrih" you will be protected from dangers and obstacles.
